Ideas of What to Include in Your 72 Hour Kit

72 Hour Emergency Kit
Notes:
  • Update your kit every six months to make sure that all food, water, and medication are fresh, clothing fits, personal documents and credit cards are up to date, and batteries are charged.
  • Small toys'games are important too as they will provide some comfort and entertainment during a stressful time.
  • Older children can be responsible for their own pack of items/cloths too.
  • You can include any other items you feel are necessary for your family's survival.
  • Some Items and/or flavors might leak, melt, "flavor" other items, or break open. Dividing groups of items into individual ziploc bags might help prevent this.
Food and water (3 day supply of food and water per person when no refrigeration/conventional cooking is available)
  • Protein/granola bars
  • Trail mix/dried fruit
  • crackers/cereals
  • canned tuna, beans, meat, vienna sausages, etc ("pop-top" cans can leak or explode, and jerky can "flavor" other items)
  • Canned juice
  • candy/gum (jolly ranchers can melt and mint gum can "flavor" other items)
  • Water (1 Gallon/per person/per day for 3 days)
Bedding and clothing
  • Change of clothing (short and long sleeve shirts, pants, socks, jackets, etc.)
  • Undergarments
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Rain coat/poncho
  • Warm blankets and Emergency Heat Blankets
  • Hand warmers
  • Plastic Sheets (you can use this and duct tape to shelter in place in a make-shift tent)
Fuel and Light
  • Battery Lighting (flashlights, lamps)
  • Extra batteries
  • Flares/Light Sticks
  • Candles
  • Lighter
  • Water-proof matches
Equipment
  • Can Opener
  • Dishes/Utensils
  • Shovel
  • Radio (with batteries)
  • Pen and paper
  • Sharpie marker (for your small kids- write their names/phone #/address on their arms with a sharpie in case they get separated from you)
  • Axe
  • Pocket knife
  • Rope
  • Duct Tape
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust masks
  • Wrench to turn off utilities if needed
  • Local maps
Personal Supplies and Medication
  • First aid supplies
  • Sunscreen
  • Toiletries (roll of toilet paper- remove the center tube to easily flatten into a ziploc bag, feminine hygiene, folding brush, tooth paste and brush, lotion, chapstick, deodorant, etc)
  • Cleaning supplies (mini hand sanitizer, soap, shampoo, dish soap, etc.  Warning- scented soap might "flavor" food items)
  • Immunizations up to date
  • Medication (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, children's medications)
  • Prescription medication for 3 days
  • Glasses (if needed)
Personal Documents and money (Place these items in a water-proof container)
  • Scriptures
  • Genealogy records
  • Patriarchal blessing
  • Legal documents (birth/marriage certificates, wills, licenses, passports, etc)
  • Vaccination papers
  • Insurance policies
  • Cash in small bills
  • Credit card
  • Prepaid phone card
  • Important phone numbers/family phone numbers and addresses
Miscellaneous
  • Infant needs (diapers, baby bottles, formula, infant clothing, etc)
  • Pet needs (pet food, leash)
  • Bags to put your 72 hour kit items in (duffle bag, backpack)  You can also put it in a suitcase with wheels for easy moving
